The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

- written April 2004

Doctors are being murdered at a terrible rate and no one can figure out the connection...until Dr. Vesalius steps in. He realizes all the victims worked on a particular woman, the wife of Dr. Phibes. She died during surgery and Dr. Phibes has never forgiven the surgeons. And now years after his own suicide, Dr. Phibes has risen from the grave to take revenge. But someone has to stop him from killing again, don’t they?

Overall: This was a lot like Price’s other works so this didn’t do much for me. The fact that Price doesn’t actually speak (the voice is played via recording), got old after awhile and really, his voice makes his characters. The way the character kills his victims is based on the 10 plagues of Egypt which makes for an entertaining series of deaths but really doesn’t connect to the rest of the storyline. Phibes bought 10 amulets, each with Hebrew signs but never indicate that Phibes is Jewish or any connection to the Jewish faith. This is really just a remake of “Theatre of Death” and that film wasn’t that good.

Comparison: Seven meets Man of La Mancha
