28 Days Later (2002)

Jim has awoken in London and all is not well. Seems everyone has vanished and he must walk through the streets the whole day before coming across even one human being. But that term is evolving constantly as a virus has taken over the city and any person infected with it becomes hungry for human blood. Jim will fight off these “zombies” and end up meeting 2 warriors as well a father/daughter combo. Soon the team will search for “the answer” and what they hope is a military contingent that can save humanity.

Overall: I didn’t go see this film in the theatres because I figured it was the usual zombie film, which I give very little respect too. However I was pleasantly surprised with the movie as the film finally tackled some nice issues to make the film as intelligent as it should have been. The film cured my biggest issue with zombies in that they are portrayed as slow but the plot fixed that issue transforming these zombies into track stars. Also the film finally tackled issues such as depression, suicide and rape. What happens when there are ladies about and you wish to re-create a society but the ladies don’t want to? What if they are the future to repopulation and only you “get it”? I also liked the idea that this virus might have only been affecting Britain and nowhere else. Go ahead and watch this one. I liked it.

There are 3 alternate endings to the film, all of which I think would have been better than the cheerful ending that went into the theatres. The first one ends with Jim dying on the operating room. The 2nd has Jim dying and the 2 ladies signaling for the airplane. The 3rd one dismisses the entire plot with the military and has the group enter the old animal research facility and with Hanna’s dad still alive, attempt a blood transfusion on Frank which involves Jim being infected and lying on the table just the same as where the film began. All 3 are better than the charismatic ending that accompanied the film. Most appropriate is the first one.

Comparison: 12 Monkeys meets The Postman
